Who does this silica awareness training cover?
As of 1 September 2024, the NSW Work Health and Safety Regulation requires all workers involved in processing or at risk of exposure to complete approved silica awareness training.

What are the risks of silica exposure?
Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is a serious workplace hazard. When inhaled, it can cause silicosis, a chronic lung disease, as well as lung cancer.
Research estimates that over 83,000 silicosis cases will arise from current levels of RCS exposure in Australia, with NSW workers among the least aware of the risks in the country.
How do I know if my workers are at risk of crystalline silica exposure?
How often do I need to take silica awareness training?
Silica awareness training is a one-off requirement. As long as a worker completes the course, they do not need to repeat it.
However, training records must be kept for the duration of their employment in high-risk silica-dust-exposure roles and for five years after they leave the business.
